Community Service

Community service is being done a little differently this year. The usual 20 hours are still required, but the community service department will be offering six 'Service Saturdays' throughout the school year to help your student(s) complete these hours. Our first Service Saturday is coming up on September 18th! Details:

Saturday, September 18th
8:30-11am
North Shore Sports & Physical Therapy (parking lot behind building) 7419 Granby St.
Registration is from 8-8:30 and includes a light breakfast! Everything required for cleaning (trash bags, vests, gloves, and drinking water) will be provided.

Come prepared to clean the corner, wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and be ready to have some fun!

Opt Out

Students are able to “opt out” of PE and take a study hall if they participate in school sports. Your child’s PE teacher will give him/her a form this week. The form MUST be filled out and returned by the due date. No late forms can be accepted due to the fact that creating the opt out sections and providing supervision for the sections is quite a lengthy process.

Varsity and JV Opt out forms are due Friday, 8/27, with opt out study hall beginning on Wednesday, 9/1. Middle school try outs will conclude on Friday, 8/27. MS forms are due Friday, 9/3, with opt out study hall beginning on Monday, 9/6.

Middle School Visitation

Parents please come to the middle school visitation night September 14th 6:30-9pm. You will meet your child’s teachers, experience their schedule first hand, and get an opportunity to sign up for all the exciting events and trips planned for this year.

You will also receive a volunteer form that night. Please be praying about how you will get involved here at the school this year. We LOVE our volunteers! We could not do all that we do in the Middle School without you! Please bring your personal calendar the night of class visitation, so you are prepared to sign up. We need your help.

We will be collecting 20 dollars on visitation night as for all of the teacher birthdays, field day, snacks, talent show prep night, island day, parent/teacher meetings, and other events held throughout the year. This will prevent us from asking for money throughout the year.

Cyber bullying insight to aid parents and staff

According to the U.S. National Crime Prevention Council, 43% of teens have been the victims of cyber bullying in the past year.

To help parents, educators, and others better understand, prevent, and take action against this growing concern, ebrary is pleased to subsidize a collection of open access e-books on cyber bullying and enable other organizations to contribute materials as long as they have copyrights.

Available today at http://site.ebrary.com/lib/cyberbullying, ebrary’s Cyber Bullying Searchable Information Center includes such titles as Click, Click, Who’s Really There?: Protect Your Family from Online Predators, Pedophiles, Privacy Loss and More, by Koh (LHK Publishing, LLC, 2006); Bullying Prevention and Intervention: Realistic Strategies for Schools, by Susan Swearer (Guilford Press, 2009); and Keep Your Kids Safe on the Internet, by Simon Johnson (McGraw-Hill, 2004). It also includes a growing selection of documents uploaded by ebrary employees from authoritative sites including the Pew Internet & American Life Project, U.S. Department of Justice, and other agencies.
