At Norfolk Christian Schools we seek to model the Holy Spirit through drama. In the same way that mere words fall short in our prayers, words alone cannot fully express the depth of passion in the human experience. The Theatre Arts provide a means to communicate deeply rooted thoughts and feelings. They allow us an opportunity to discover ourselves and our neighbors, that in understanding those He created we gain understanding of the Creator and the vastness of His compassion and grace. To this end Norfolk Christian Schools offer classroom opportunities for exploration and performance at the middle school level and appreciation, communication, performance and construction at the high school level. These are supplemented by extra-curricular activities including the drama club, forensics team and the spring play. Students are introduced to theater vocabulary, theater hierarchy, and stage geography. They discover acting technique through as series of exploratory drama games and exercises.
Focusing predominately on oral interpretation with a brief introduction to speech communication, this course will improve the students’ vocal abilities and public confidence. In this semester class, students will engage in Bible reading, poetry reading, storytelling, humorous and dramatic interpretation and impromptu speaking. They will present their work through in-class forensic competition.
This course addresses the basic skills required for successful public speaking such as dealing with communication apprehension, improving organization and developing delivery techniques. Students will become aware of the effect of audience, language and presentation on this vital communication process. Many practical speaking opportunities are utilized within the class. The annual spring play is an extracurricular ensemble production of talented students who win their roles through the audition process. Participation requires good academic standing.
