Drumline wows Norfolk Lower School

Social distancing couldn’t keep our Ambassadors from celebrating Spirit Week. Since we weren’t able to have a pep rally, our High School Drumline paid the Norfolk Lower School a visit on Wednesday and gave everyone something to jump and dance about. With classes sectioned off and lining the field, it was a great way to be together while still staying a safe distance apart. Even our next-door neighbor firefighters got to enjoy the performance! And some brave, budding drummers tried their hands out at a new talent. A big thanks to NCS alumnus Ben Mekkes ’15 and his Drumline team for making Wednesday the best day of the week!

It was hot, humid and the ceremony had been going for three hours. This beautiful Christian school in Mwanza, Tanzania was holding its graduation ceremony and I had been invited as a guest because of its partnership with my former school. Everyone was incredibly gracious, from their energetic and engaging Head of School (pictured) to the five-year-olds sitting quietly in the front row. My presence there was invited, but not because of my (cough, cough) sparkling personality; rather, because of my position as the Headmaster of a partnering Christian school in the US. Every word I spoke to the attending crowd had nothing to do with me. It had everything to do with what I was a representative of–my school, and American Christians generally. I was fulfilling a role as ambassador.

The mission of NCS is to equip ambassadors. And for 68 years, we’ve been doing so. Children and young adults receive formation…guide rails by which the paths of their lives are marked out (Prov. 22:6).  The goal of our forefathers and those of us here today is that students would become fully ready to set their egos aside, find fulfillment in their purpose (to glorify Him and enjoy Him forever) and serve as Christ’s Ambassadors in the world. Interestingly, in both the Old and New Testaments (Hebrew and Greek), the term for Ambassador ( צִיר and presbeuō) means “messenger” and “representative,” respectively.

That is what Christ’s Ambassadors do, they deliver the message of Christ as they represent Him in the world. They do this not by sitting back and critiquing everything and everyone that they believe to be wrong, or conversely, conforming to the image of the world. Rather, a true Ambassador engages with the world, shining the light in dark places. The Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path (Ps 119:105). Picture an oil lamp that brightens only the area around which you are standing, not a spotlight that can light up an area from afar. In order for ambassadors to bring the light to the darkness, they must go to where it is dark.

Our mission at Norfolk Christian, above all else, is to equip young humans with both the knowledge of and experience with God’s unchanging Word so that when they leave this community, each one will shine the light wherever God sends them.

It is the mission of Norfolk Christian Schools to equip students spiritually, intellectually and physically to love God and to serve Him as Christ’s ambassadors in the world.

Shortened Athletic Season Starts in December

Shortened Athletic Season Starts in December

The TCIS has announced that competition within the conference will take place this year, with each season being shortened so that all sports can be squeezed in after the late start date. The Winter Season will kick off the year in December, followed by fall sports and ending with spring.

VISAA announced in July that they would not sponsor state championships for the 2020-21 school year so we are delighted that conference play is moving forward. Student-athletes were able to work out over the summer in small groups and will begin formal conditioning later in September.

Norfolk Christian Athletic teams will have the following revised schedule:

WINTER SPORTS:  November 18 – January 30

Tryouts begin: November 18

First Competition: December 8

FALL SPORTS: February 1 – March 27

Tryouts begin:   January 25

First Competition:  February 16

SPRING SPORTS:  March 29 – May 22

Tryouts begin:   March 22

First Competition:   April 13

Three Seniors Win Prestigious University Awards

During the first week of school, Director of Academic Support Jill Randall had the pleasure of surprising three current seniors with awards from prestigious universities in Virginia.

These awards would normally have been given out at the end of junior year but were delayed until students were able to return to campus this fall.

A huge congratulations to these hard-working students – what a great way to kick off senior year!

Congrats to our New Middle Schoolers!

This was far from the graduation celebration we had planned for our 5th graders. Missing were the traditional 5th grade cruise and ceremony. But these budding 6th graders took it all in stride and showed up with smiles on their faces for a drive-through graduation on their campuses. With diplomas handed out through car windows, sunroofs, even truck beds, it was not the day we had planned but it was a day to remember forever! Congratulations to our newest sixth grade Ambassadors!
